GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES The Smart City Specialist will play a critical role in advancing the City of Waterloo’s efforts to integrate cutting-edge technology and data-driven solutions into an urban infrastructure. This role involves working on smart city projects that enhance the quality of life, sustainability, and operational efficiency by leveraging IoT, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and other digital innovations. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Illustrative only) These functions are considered essential for successful performance in this job classification. Project Development & Implementation: Lead and manage initiatives to implement smart city technologies in transportation, energy management, infrastructure, department software, and urban services. Projects may include smart grids, smart traffic systems, public safety innovations, IoT-connected infrastructure, sustainable energy solutions, and both inter- and external department software. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work with city officials, city staff, tech companies, and community organizations to ensure alignment with city goals and address local challenges. Facilitate collaboration with government agencies, private partners, and non-profits to foster successful partnerships. Data Management & Analysis: Oversee the collection, processing, and analysis of city data (e.g., traffic, workflow, utilities) to generate insights that inform decision-making. Utilize AI and machine learning models to predict trends and optimize city operations for better performance. Technology Integration & Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging smart city technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, fiber optics, 5G, renewable energy, and advanced sensor networks. Explore how these technologies can be integrated into the city’s infrastructure to address pressing city issues. Policy & Regulatory Compliance: Work with city officials to ensure that smart city projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including privacy laws, cybersecurity, and environmental standards. Sustainability Initiatives: Identify opportunities to use technology to drive environmental sustainability, such as reducing energy consumption, improving waste management, and promoting green energy solutions. Public Engagement & Education: Develop outreach programs to educate citizens about the benefits of smart city technologies and encourage public participation in technology-driven city initiatives. Continuous Improvement: Monitor the success of deployed technologies and systems, identify areas for improvement, and recommend alternative changes or expansions. Use performance metrics to track the impact of smart city projects.
